Jesters' Daily Roundup: Old Guns, New Blood, Big Tips & Consolations

The Challenge races are still controlling the site but there is still a few things worthy of writing about, albeit not as much as before. The Finals are worthy of the attention though and the excitement they generate makes me wish I had some runners of my own in there. The forums are still flooded with congratulatory messages but they will soon cease as the season dies down and we start afresh in August.

The End For Auroborealis

The legendary Auroborealis is now only a day away from retirement and isn’t going out with the kick that his owner had perhaps hoped for. The seven year old monster raced in two Consolation races but was beaten into eighth on both occasions and yesterday he raced in a WFA against the exceptional Joyride from Sky Castle Stables and Sharpshooter from Burkveen Racing (who is also retiring soon) but was beaten by both and ended up last.

It remains to be seen if this race was the final race for the mighty Auroborealis but I am sure he will have something coming up on the final day of the season. But if he retired with his current form then his final win would have been the success he enjoyed in a four horse Level Weight race on the 26th of July when he beat Unleash The Beast, Swoop To Kill and Popsicle.

New Blood

Continuing on our “Public Enemy Watch” it seems that after a Final and a Consolation win the top horse, who will look to match the glory that Auroborealis has achieved, was then dropped into a B Division race just after he had flipped. “Running on low fitness as flipped yesterday so nothing much to worry about” his owner assured the other runners and stables which included Coopertown from Squiza1 Racing, Lion’s Circle from Winbank Farm Stable, Sporttery from Stable TSIN and Liveoak Stables’ Narcissist.

Public Enemy No1 won the race in the end with over a length to spare on second placed Coopertown. Yasmin Chua was on board and the strength of the horse (despite it’s low fitness) was enough to beat Eric Sun, Jacques Girard and Fabio Valentino. I have seen Lion’s Circle, Coopertown and Narcissist run and can say that these three horses are certainly no slouches so this win further adds to the status of the great Public Enemy No1. “Must have been the low weight he was running off” his owner suggested after the race but Narcissist was running off the same weight and being the previous owner I have seen his TT’s and know that he is a quality horse, so this was certainly a good show for this rising star.

Good News For The Tipping Competition

The Tipping Competition brought a lot of joy to many trainers last season and the Bonus Credits that the season champion Nacho Libre received for a weekly win were even used to bring in the above mentioned Public Enemy No1. A lot of stables enjoy playing the competition that Jim from Celtic F.C works so hard on and it was announced yesterday (by Jim) that the sponsorship for next season has been declared at a massive £3.2k.

That means that the weekly prizes will still be a hefty $100 (with $50 for second and $25 for third) whilst the best tipster for each month will receive $50 and the best tipster for the whole season will collect $200. Don’t forgot this competition is free to enter and can be entered by all who have forum access, here is a quote from the manager himself on how to register for next season “I will post a pre registration thread on the competitions forum on Saturday morning, I ask that anyone wishing to pre register to remember this closes at midnight Sunday UK time, otherwise leave a minimum tip for Mondays racing.”

Big Wins In The Early Birds

With the excitement of the Challenge finals and the Consolations it is easy to forget that there are still plenty of top races being run, and some of them are still being covered by Ladbrokes. Here is a quick rundown of the best bets available on the EB races last night.

Things were looking bright early on when Missy Ironside took second (on a race which was only paying for first and second) at a massive 46/1, no doubt taking a few scalps in that race and looking like a very tasty Each Way bet. That was the 19:26 race and ten minutes later in the 19:36 a good Each Way price become a better winning price when Eight2eightfive won at 12/1, beating 13/5 shot Snow In June down into second whilst Dave Kill 29 mopped up third at 11/2.

Any Wonder improved on that though when the horse fought a hard fight to win at odds of 20/1 in the 19:56, ahead of 7/4 shot Classic Quest and 5/1 Copland Murder. Neanderthal (NOR) was recently picked up when taking a place at some very strong odds and the Nordic horse improved on that run today with a win at the very attractive price of 15/1 in the 20:12; Evens favourite Deadly impact could only manage second. The wins continued though and a mere ten minutes later Goat Girl scored an 18/1 win ahead of 3/1 Speedy Gal and 6/4 favourite Go Cows.

Consolation Races

Sixteen races were on the cards for the final day of the Challenge series with a whole host of stables hoping to get their hands on the massive amount of Bonus Credits on offer.

Cesarewitch Colts

Al Mighty won the Cesarewitch colts Final and Burkveen Racing won it for the fillies, but Shotgun_Mike (the biggest stable in the game) wasn’t going to be upstaged and bit back in the consolation races. They won the first four Consolation colt races thanks to the runs of Cape Traverse, Wish I Was Two, Long Trip and Fiddle Isle, and what was even more of a great achievement was that three of those four races finished with a one-two as Full Closure, Agent Ace and Aquila Heliaca all took seconds. Sky Castle Stables also found themselves with quite a few thirds and fourths in these races. The fifth consolation race was then won by Chac’s Champion Stal and the great Infinate Spirit as Shotgun_Mike took second and third, whilst the final race (a three horses affair) was won by Peregrine and Beegeesus.

Cesarewitch Fillies

The colts carried a massive six instances but that was halved for the fillies who only had three on the cards. The first of which was won by Team Johansson and Team Johanss 4454. The top stable haven’t really made much of a podium appearance in these finals but they also took third in this race with Majestic Steele. Their luck continued though as Royal Marine won the second instance for them before Oamaru Miss (NZ) and Beau Geste took a one-two for the top stable to put them on track with some Challenge success this season.

St Leger

Shotgun_Mike was back in Consolation form as the Colt Consolation races kicked off and they took a one-two with Letselope and Imperia Infinitum, before winning the second instance with Heavenly Father. The fillies only had one Consolation and only eight horses had qualified for it and the race was won by Secruityprotected and Currock Park in the end.

Consolation Stayers

There were two instances for colts and two for fillies in this Consolation. Alan Devonshire took the first instance for Heinz with Pompadours and Paved With Gold taking second. The second instance went to Sky Castle Stables whose horse Interact beat a field of eight to claim the prize.

Helium won the first fillies Consolation thanks to a great run from The Gorgeous Girl who beat Team Johansson and Majestic Majority into second. The second instance and the final Consolation race of the season went to Ollie Holloway and their horse Sand Cove (IRE).

Are The World Challenge Day Races The Ultimate Send-off?

Are The World Challenge Day Races The Ultimate Send-off?

The show ain't over 'til the fat lady sings, and on Raceclubs it is the RP who helps her hit those high notes all night long.

All the hype is centred around the Challenge Series is great... until the day after. Then it’s just like the day after Christmas, the day after the honeymoon or the day after- well, the Challenge Series. All that hype and the races run and someone wins and someone loses and everyone thinks that if things had been different they would be the Challenge Series Winner. If only ...

Fortunately, the party never stops on Raceclubs. If you’re good at it and keep going all night with the RP you can even make some good money out of it. Well, that’s what the fat lady said about the RP but we didn’t want to pry.

Apparently, in the good old days of Raceclubs, there weren’t consolation races and trainers were justifiably miffed that they couldn’t race their supped horses in the Finals. Some trainers argued their horses were better than the actual finalist but never had time to earn enough qualifier points to make the final field. Then there were the arguments that the track wasn’t right, or there was something wrong with the distances or the goings were going to trip their runners, etc, etc, etc. The forums would get quite spirited but fortunately the RP recognised the potential for a new category race that catered for all champions (and potential champions) to compete against each other. Plus there was novelty of racing the juvenile champions against the veteran champions. By Jove, all your horse ever needed was a supplementary fee, two wins and a prayer and it was good to go.

(Jul 2003)

The World Challenge Day WFA races proved to be so popular they generated a level excitement reserved for the final race of the season. They’re competitive enough to be prestigious but being the last day of the season one can relax and simply enjoy the opportunity to race their favourite horses against their favourite rivals one last time before the new season begins. It’s the one race where you can resign yourself to the fact that you win some and you lose some... and they help pass the time before the new season begins and a whole new level of competition and financial opportunity presents itself on your doorstep.

It didn’t take long for the GR2 racers to campaign, lobby and politicize the issue of a GR2 Challenge Series, or lack thereof. While the RP rejected the idea of sponsoring a GR2 Challenge Series because it would reduce the budget for sponsoring the Championship Series, he was open to the idea of sponsoring WCD GR2 at the end of each season. Initially this was motivated as a race for the many GR2 horses that were supped in the Sales Ring, but eventually this condition was scrapped- and cleared the way for all horses, regardless if they were supped or unsupped, to enter the World Challenge Day WFA races.

(Nov 2006)

The World Challenge Day races have become an institution that is proudly Raceclubs. They’re as much a part of our culture as a good curry and watching the Queen on telly; and Raceclubs is always excited to see all trainers racing their horses one last time before the season comes to an end.

Best wishes with all your WCD races, your horses’ age changes and reigning in all your juveniles for next season!

Where Champions Find Consolation

Where Champions Find Consolation

On Raceclubs, we maintain that all horses are challengers, even if only in spirit and not through their actual performance but the fact remains that the virtual horseracing community is nothing if not the glorious celebration of victory and victorious racing.

We reward the Challenge Series races with incredibly lucrative cash sponsorships and even the qualifier runners are acknowledged in the Consolation races. Thankfully, the Challenge Series is based on merit (notwithstanding massive amounts of cash) so that only the best of the best are competing against each other. Everyone also knows that it’s not always about winning a race that defines a champion, but running like a champion. A true champion knows that performance outweighs final position and accepts defeat as graciously, and humbly, as a victory. But what if those champions didn’t make the final grade?

Fortunately, the end of season is a lot like Christmas, except that it comes three times a year without the annoying jingles- HRH RP loves nothing more than Christmas besides sponsoring races, especially for the challengers and contenders alike. Unlike Scrooge, the man has no self-restraint when it comes to sponsoring races. He programmed all 54 consolation races with sponsorships ranging from $1,000 onwards.

What more could you ask for? You could always console yourself with the fact that your horse probably wouldn’t have liked the goings in the Challenge Series and that winning a consolation is better than merely running the Finals.

Fortunately, Consolation are highly desirable races. Entry is free and automatics. They’re sponsored to the hilt. And winning a consolation race is better than losing a championship. This season, Raceclubs is celebrating another batch of bumper Consolation runners. If they’re not your horses, perhaps you should start planning to fill some of them with your horses next season!

The $12,000 Challenge Series Finals

The $12,000 Challenge Series Finals

The 4/7Y Challenge Series is getting an injection of fresh blood this season as over 45% percent of all runners are fit and furious four year olds braced for the four Challenge seasons ahead of them. It’s is always encouraging to witness the swelling of the new guard rising continue the tradition of competitive virtual horseracing in the Newbury Sprint Challenge Final, Queen Elizabeth Classic Challenge Final, King George Classic Challenge Final and the Cesarewitch Challenge Final.

Sumatra Sunset, Kingdom Of Myth, Palgrave Star, Cheerokee Chief,Virtual Suicide, ForcáApõcalyptica, Gunsynd (QLD), Devil's Disciple, Magnus Subsisto, Zombieslayerdylan, Carpathian Queen, Queen Anastasia, Reason To Doubt, Spy Who Loved Me, Weather The Storm, Virtual Suicide, Megalomaniac, Gunsynd (QLD), Devil's Disciple, El Che Guevara, Natural Element, Bundaberg, Embrujo Rojo, Bullseye, South Central, Fanatique, Rough Habit, New York Nitro, Africa Minha, Spiritus, Bellagio, Recursos Fenómeno, Jet Trice, Siarah Tiara, Carpathian Queen, Snow Queen and Princess Irmilie to become household names over the next couple of seasons as trainers clamor to pick up a long-term moneymaker for their stable.

Another pleasant note for the season, there aren’t any 7Y challengers to say goodbye to after the season.

Whichever horse you will be championing in the races- we all hope it does well. Best wishes for your 4/7Y Championship Series races.

Who Will Win The Triple Crown?

The Nunthorpe, Oaks, Derby and St Leger are grand Challenge Series races for three-year old horses. All horses run off level weights (unlike the juveniles or older horses), they’re competing for $16,000, plus if they’re crowned the Triple Crown Champion this year their winnings are doubled. It’s a win-win-win Challenge Series.

Winning $16,000 in three days with the added possibility of it being doubled is the kind of high stakes, adrenaline rush that could lead to dependency and addiction problems in later life. Fortunately, with a good age change that winning streak could continue for the next four seasons in the Newbury, Queen Elizabeth, King George and Cesarewitch Finals.

Considering the highly addictive stakes involved, the RP wasn’t surprised in the slightest to note the multiple entries from top trainers competing in this season’s 3Y Challenge Series. Clearly both the Sales Ring and the jockeys have been good to Chac`s Champion Stal, Muggins Racing and Newell Racing who all have five challengers running this season.

Showing uncharacteristic restraint this season, Shotgun_mike only has six 3Y challengers while neighbor / rival Team Johansson has another 6. If there were an award for most number of challengers running, Sky Castle Stables would certainly win it hands down with his 10 contenders.

Some trainers might suggest that it only takes one champion to win Challenge Series. May it be the best one!

Hot Tip for next season: Start planning to win the Triple Crown!

Raceclubs’ $22,000 Juveniles

Raceclubs’ New $22,000 Juvenile Challengers Raceclubs trainers buffered themselves successfully against the global credit crunch by racing their juvenile horses against each other in the more lucratively sponsored Qualifier races versus the traditional stakes races. This sleight of hand nomination strategy saw the Challenge Series Finals grow substantially on previous Challenge Series.

It appears that what one loses on the roundabout one gains in the Challenge Series on Racesclubs. That might sound like child’s play to the uninitiated, but that little swing in GR1 nominations amounts to $22,000 cash sponsorships to this season’s Juvenile Challenge Series runners.

Considering the downward trend in consumer spending this year, the Race Programmer attributes this growth in Championship Series runners, particularly amongst the juveniles, to be the combined result of increased sponsorships and improved marketing. Trainers have also realized that running in a qualifier is more lucrative than running in a traditional stakes race.

The Juvenile Championship Series remains a highlight on Digiturf as the future champions of the virtual horse racing community are debuted. Ironically, if ever you needed a better reason to buy more 2Y horses next season- this would be it!

Today these juveniles take on the Raceclubs’ 24th Challenge Series, tomorrow: The World!
