Jester's Daily Racing Roundup

Daily Roundup - August 31st

There were plenty of Cash sponsored races on the Grade One cards today and Madonna was in town to make a few appearances.

The Big Boys Start The Day

The day of Grade One racing began with two wins for current Challenge horses. We opened up this final day of the month with a race named after the queen of pop, as the ‘Madonna’s Spotlight’ race was run at 10:00AM GMT. Heinz had two runners in this race with Butlers Yard, Alan Brotherton and fast improving Squiza1 Racing making up the field and hoping for a big stake in a pot of £42.50 which had been beefed up with £13.60 in Bonus Credits.

The race went the way of Addict Insane from Heinz as the young stayer took his first victory. He has just finished a run in the Monthly Challenge Series where he avoided a win penalty in the Qualifiers, got to the final and finished down in tenth, so the win from this race now gives Addict Insane what is needed to enter the Qualifiers for the End Of Season Finals.

Next up was a C Division race for three year olds. There was a cash added bonus of £30.50 at stake and four horses had entered the race with Sn Stable, Alan Brotherton, Queen Bee and Team Johansson all nominating runners. Charlie Saxon was picked out for this race but his ride of Basis Point from Sn Stable could only provide him with a runner-up spot as Challenge runner Jade And Diamond from Alan Brotherton took a fantastic victory with the worst random. The colt was in a Stayer Consolation race last season and looks to be trying for a Consolation/Final in the St Leger this season.

Keep The Cash Flowing

There were plenty of upset trainers at the end of last season when RC announced that the Grade One sponsorship would be cut, but we were lucky to find that the huge cash bonus of £30.50 wouldn’t be halved, but rather the races would just run less frequently. A recent vote did seem to declare that the £30.50 will be cut after all as the money will be split down the middle with the mixed sex races spilt and each sex taking their cut. An unhappy divorce for a few but it was voted for by the community and the vast majority were in favour.

Despite this, todays card was fueled with many Cash added races. After Jade And Diamond scored a victory in the second race of the day, Nuggets Lose went on to win in a four horse field for Team Johansson; collecting a pot of £61 (enhanced by the £30.50 added cash bonus). The horse looks like a solid runner and seemed to have turned a very nice profit for Team Johansson who picked it up in a £10.20 Claimer just three days ago from Desperado Racing.

Madonna’s Bedtime Story B Division race followed this one as another four horses set up to have a go at a pot that totaled £71 thanks to the help of another cash bonus. Drearily named Gods Country 689 took the victory with the mount of Heinz Huber, with Show And Go a strong second for Price Racing and Rapid Forever and Fancy Fancy taking the other places for Stable 76 and Stable TSIN.

The cash races didn’t end there though as the EBs kicked off and we saw a Ladbrokes Maiden with the usual £20.40 Cash attached to it. This three horse race over a mile of English turf was won by Esperanza from Death Row whilst Majestic Hacienda and Banjul placed for Team Johansson and Whitewidow.

The Beast Within Is Beaten

Unleash The beast was scheduled for a four horse Non-Graded race today and his owner Bigboysteve no doubt delighted fellow runners when he declared that “The Beast is very unfit and very beatable”. Sqiuza1 Racing are making a huge impact on the Grade One scene and seem to be throwing their horses into these races with a great thirst for the game. They had a three year old A and a two year old B set up to run in this WFA, perhaps not the best choice of runners but it would be two more runs and places to add to their collection. Zagreb from Heinz was the other runner, the seven year old has had a very extensive and impressive career. He has raced in two Claimers, sixteen Rated Races and one-hundred and sixty-five Stakes races, earning over £1.700.

As expected the race proved to be a battle between Zagreb and Unleash The Beast with the two runners from Squiza1 Racing failing to keep up. In the final dash Zagreb managed to beat the beast in style and claimed victory by over a length, the ride of Charlie Saxon did help but the big winning gap suggested that any of the top four jockeys would have done the trick.

Worth Every Penny

Caligula left the Peregrine stable in the auction before last and found a new home at Victor Consortio who paid £150.75 for the experienced and classy seven year old. With just over three months left to run the horse it was clear the new owners had a challenge on their hands to secure a profit, but their worries were quickly suppressed when Caligula secured a win in a King George Classic Qualifier just two days after his purchase. With a poor jockey he then went on to place fourth in a WFA eight days ago.

Caligula was back on the top of the podium today though after winning a Level Weight race and bagging the better share of a £51 pot. By my reckoning the top runner is only a big win away from recouping his purchase price and from there he can, and surely will, run into a very pretty profit.

Claims

With two big auctions in just three weeks there has been a mass of horses changing stables and no doubt there has been many blown budgets, but some trainers still had cash to spend as the Claiming Races lured in plenty of interest today as well as many horses switching stables over the weekend. Here is a quick rundown of some of the Claims to take place today.

New stable Southern State, who joined at the end of last season, looked to expand their stable today when they purchased Three Swallows from Lionheart, they were the only ones who wanted to claim the six year old runner and they paid £17 for him. He now becomes the biggest earner in their stable with his win count of twenty-two making him the biggest winner.

In the first Claimer of the day Full Force Racing beat one other hopeful trainer to take Saturn Girl, formerly of Irish Jeweller, to their stable. Appleyard Estate later claimed Majestic Milk from Desperado Racing who had four runners in one race, with Majestic Milk finishing the furthest down of all those four and placing sixth in total. Appleyard Estate also claimed Desperado Ra 3875 in the next race, whilst Desperado Racing went on to sell three more with Classic Aye (Nicky’s Nags), Courtney’s Boy (Team Johansson) and Big Bad Bear (Belgique) all finding new homes.

The 14:50 was the biggest Non-Graded Claiming race of the day. The sprinting field of fourteen attracted nine runners with five horses switching stables, including the winner Row The Boat (Full Force Racing) and last placed Replacement (Slowstables). Slowstables also claimed Payment whilst La Catira Stable bought both Silver Frame and The Big Bang from Black Smoke.
